Autumn is here, and in this blog, we turn our attention to seasonal pet health tips for fall plus North Bay veterinarian advice to help you keep your pets healthy, happy, and safe this season—and all year long.

Seasonal Pet Health Tips

When preparing pets for fall, keep these seasonal pet health tips in mind:

Be vigilant with tick protection: Tick season in Ontario slows down during the summer, but ramps up again from September to November. An unprotected pet is at risk of serious tick-borne diseases. Use flea and tick prevention year-round for optimal protection.

Snuff out fall allergies: Mold and ragweed are on the rise this season. If your pet suffers from seasonal allergies, schedule a veterinary appointment right away to discuss treatment options.

Prepare for falling temperatures: You don’t want to be caught unprepared when the first snow falls! Make sure pet beds and blankets are still in good shape, and that your pet has appropriate outerwear and paw booties for protection against ice, salt, and snow.

Watch for signs of joint pain: Cooler temperatures are harder on senior pets and those with arthritis. Watch for symptoms such as a reluctance to be active and limping. Ask us about nutritional supplements such as Cosequin that can help.

Keep your pet active: Make sure your pet is still getting plenty of exercise to prevent obesity, even if it means engaging in more playtime indoors.

North Bay Veterinarian Advice to Keep Pets Safe

In addition to seasonal pet health tips, when preparing pets for fall it’s important to practice these safety precautions:

Watch for wildlife: As hibernation approaches, many wild animals are actively—and sometimes aggressively—looking for food. Avoid walking in heavily wooded areas and steer clear of wild critters.

Gear up for walks after dark: Shorter days mean less light for dog walking. Make sure both you and your dog have reflective gear for safety.

Clean up antifreeze: Antifreeze smells and tastes sweet, and it’s highly poisonous to pets. Make sure any drips and spills are cleaned up right away, and store antifreeze out of pet’s reach.

Decorate responsibly: With Halloween and other celebrations on the horizon, be thoughtful about where you place decorations that could be enticing for pets to chew on, and use flameless candles in jack-o-lanterns.

Keep toxic foods off the pet menu: Festive foods are often loaded with fat, salt, or sugar, and should not be shared with pets. Sugar-free candy containing xylitol and chocolate goodies are particularly dangerous.

Have your pet microchipped: It’s easier to lose track of a pet in the dark, so if you haven’t already, schedule a visit to have your pet microchipped.
