Benefits of Laser Therapy for Pets

Veterinary laser therapy provides effective and non-invasive relief for numerous health conditions. Parkside Animal Hospital offers this service to our patients as a part of our approach to safe, modern veterinary medicine. Keep reading to learn more about the benefits of laser therapy for pets.
State of the Art Technology
Lasers, or Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation, are commonplace in veterinary hospitals because they have so many benefits to veterinarians and their patients. Also known as Class IV, cold, or low-level laser therapy, this modality uses concentrated light to increase blood flow and stimulate cell regeneration. By moving a handheld laser wand over the affected area, we can target injuries, strain, and pain to achieve optimal healing results.
While a pet receives laser therapy, the following outcomes may be immediately obvious or visible after a few sessions:
- Decreased nerve sensitivity
- Relaxed muscles
- Expedited healing of wounds or surgical incisions
- Reduced swelling
No sedation is required. In fact, the process is so relaxing that many pets fall asleep during the approximate 5-15 minute treatment. Veterinary personnel and our patients wear protective goggles to protect the retina.
Laser Therapy for Pets
An important part of a pet’s recovery process and/or pain management treatment plan, laser therapy is an effective, non-invasive treatment for these conditions:
- Arthritis
- Wounds
- Traumatic injuries
- Surgical incisions
- Tendon, tissue, and ligament injuries
Stand Alone or Applied Together
Laser therapy is often used at the same time as other treatments, such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication or pain relievers, to provide the widest protection against pain and inflammation.
That said, however, some pets experience laser therapy separately from conventional medications because of their age, disease, or decreased organ function. We work with pet owners to determine the best course of action to relieve pain and promote healing.
The benefits of veterinary laser therapy are cumulative. Depending on a pet’s condition, we will design a treatment plan that maximizes the benefits of laser therapy in the shortest period of time.
